There’s a lot happening in Proviso Township this week. Below is just a sampling of things to do in the area for you and your family:
Experience a domestic violence interactive simulation
On Friday, Oct. 5, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., at Triton College (Room B-270), 2000 S. 5th Ave. in River Grove, Triton will host the first in a series of events throughout October to commemorate Domestic Violence Awareness Month. All events are free to attend and open to the public.
The Friday event is a domestic violence simulation (in her shoes for male students and in their shoes for female students). Join this interactive simulation into the lives of women in abusive relationships and learn how you can better support your friends who may be experiencing domestic abuse.

Attend the 2018 Food Summit
On Friday, Oct. 5, and Saturday, Oct. 6, Loyola Stritch School of Medicine, 2160 S. 1st Ave. in Maywood, will host the 2018 Food Summit, organized by the Cook County Department of Public Health. Cost of registration is $50. Anyone interested in registering should visit: cookcountypublichealth.org/.
The summit will feature two one-hour tours of the Proviso Giving Garden, near Madison St. and 1st Ave. in Maywood. The summit will also feature information on the Good Food Purchasing Policy, which entails universities and hospitals purchasing locally grown produce from area urban farms and gardens in order to support the local economy.

Attend a free youth breakfast
On Saturday, Oct. 6, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., at the Maywood Multipurpose Building, 200 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood, Maywood Youth Mentoring will host its monthly youth breakfast. This month’s topic: Choices: Pay me now or pay me later. Speaker: Miguel Curl, educator/coach mentor, coordinator for school age programs for the North Lawndale YMCA. Learn self-defense for Domestic Awareness Month
On Saturday, Oct. 6, 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., at 1301 E. 47th St. in Chicago, Bellwood-based Lade will host a self-defense class under direction of Sensai Abayomi Mosi, Master Marquinn McDonald and Grand Master Terry Pointer in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Attend the Property After Death Workshop
On Saturday, Oct. 6, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., at the Maywood Public Library, 121 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood, Cook County Recorder of Deeds Karen Yarbrough will host a Property After Death Workshop. Attendees will learn how to protect your property against theft, transfer your home, car and bank account without a will or trust, and avoid probate court and costly legal fees.
Get Money Smart
On Saturdays, Oct. 6, Oct. 13, Oct. 20 and Oct. 27, noon to 1 p.m., at the Maywood Public Library, 121 S. 5th Ave. in Maywood, Proviso Community Bank will host free Money Smart classes.
The Money Smart for Adults instructor-led curriculum consists of 11 training modules that cover basic financial topics, including how to choose and maintain a checking account, descriptions of deposit and credit services, and spending plans, among other topics.
